Week Commencing 13th July 2020

Hello Year 2,

You did it! You made it to the end of the school year and what a different summer term it has been – one we will always remember. We are so proud of how well you have coped with all the challenges you have faced this year and the effort you have put in to improving both academically and your wellbeing. We have been amazed by the resilience and determination you have shown particularly this last term. For your topic work this week we would like you to reflect on your lockdown experience and record it in a way you choose – it could be a picture, sentences, a mind map or you might choose something different.

It is our last week of Oak Academy Maths and English lessons. There is an additional Maths challenge about money and an English challenge using common exception words in sentences. We would also like you to write a book review and it would be great, if you haven’t already, if you signed up for the summer reading challenge. We hope you have enjoyed the activities we have set you on Purple Mash. It has been fantastic to see and hear what you have produced. Remember if you save your work your teachers can see it and then we can send you a comment and give you stickers for your hard work.

Last week for your wellbeing activity we asked you to look back on this school year but this week we would like you to look forward to Year 3. A new school year is exciting as it is a fresh start, a chance to set new goals and work hard to achieve them. What are you most looking forward to? What would you like to achieve?

We have all missed your happy faces and can’t wait to see you in school again. Keep caring for others, keep safe and keep smiling. Have an amazing summer, with lots of fresh air, and continue to make us proud! It has been a pleasure to teach you all, thank you.

Week Commencing 6th July 2020

Hello Year 2,

We hope you are all well. How did you get on with the second week of your challenge? We are sure you are trying hard and persevering.

This week for your wellbeing activity we would like you to take some time to reflect on your year in Year 2. We know this has been a strange year with all that is going on but we are sure you have lots of super memories of school. We would love to hear about some of your best memories. It will be wonderful when we can all return and be together again.

You will notice there are some new exciting tasks on your weekly overview. We have started using Purple Mash for you to share work with us. Please log in to Purple Mash through your RM unify and click on 2Dos. We have set you 3 tasks this week to complete on there. If you save your work, your teachers can see it and then we can send you a comment and give you stickers for your hard work. We are really looking forward to seeing your game box covers and melodies. We have also set you a 2Do which looks at recall of your 5 times tables.

Have you had the chance to enter the summer reading challenge yet? We hope you are enjoying it. If you haven’t joined yet, have a look on this week’s overview and take a look. We hope you enjoyed watching your teacher read their story last week. We are sure you have all watched lots of the other teachers reading their stories as well! We hope you have had fun conducting some investigations for science. This week we would like you to conduct some more investigations of your choice.

We are all missing you in school. We miss your voices in the corridors and your smiling faces as you come into school.

Have an amazing week and remember to keep smiling!

Miss Moore, Mr Bottoms and Miss Davies

Week Commencing 29th June 2020

Hello Year 2,

We hope you are all well and staying positive. Hopefully you have had a chance to enjoy the lovely weather we have had this week. Have you spotted our video stories on the school website yet? We really enjoyed reading these stories for you. If you have had a look at your teacher’s video why not have a look at another teacher in year 2 reading their story? I hope you have also had a chance to see our amazing OFSTED report. We are so proud of you all and hope you enjoyed our celebration video from all the staff at Gig Mill.

We hope you are still enjoying your home learning tasks. It would be lovely to see some of the abstract artwork you have produced. Remember you can send your work through email for your teacher to see. Email your creations to the school email hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject). As you may have noticed, there are some changes to the weekly overviews. We have tried to make these a little easier and have included some tips to help you complete the tasks.

From this week, you will notice in our overviews that where a video is being used from YouTube we are accessing it through SafeYouTube to make sure that the content that you see is always safe and suitable. You will now only see the video that we wish to share via the link on our overview which helps to ensure that we are all keeping safe online.

How are you getting on with your wellbeing challenge? We have all been trying hard to stick to the challenges we set ourselves and are all doing well so far. This week we would like you to keep persevering with the challenge you have set for yourself. For topic this week, we would like you to look at healthy eating and design your own picnic. Hopefully, if the weather is nice, you could go for a picnic outdoors with your family. It would be great to see pictures of the picnics you have designed.

We hope you have a lovely week. Remember all we would like for you to do is try your best. Don’t worry if you can’t complete all of the tasks, just try to do as many as you can. Keep smiling and stay positive.

Dear Year 2,

We hope you are all still staying positive and enjoying your time at home. Hopefully you are enjoying the activities and challenges we have set for you. It’s been fantastic to see some of your creations, you’re all so talented. Don’t forget, if you would like to share your work with us or send any pictures, you can use the school email
hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject). It always puts a smile on our faces when you do.

Did you enjoy finding out facts about Stourbridge last week? What was your favourite fact? It would be great to see any of the beautiful pieces of art you created for the Dudley Castle competition. Can you believe it is 950 years old? Imagine all those candles on a cake!

This week, as well as the Oak National Academy lessons, we would like you to think of a challenge that will require you to be resilient and that you’ll have to persevere in order to improve. We have all thought of active challenges but it could be any skill you would like to improve. It could be a creative challenge or maybe a cooking challenge, there are lots of ways we can improve. We have also focused on space rockets this week. We would like you to look at some artwork, create your own and make your own rocket that launches.

Remember not to worry if you can’t complete all the tasks, just try your best to do as many as you can. Keep smiling

We miss you,

Mr Bottoms, Miss Davies, Miss Moore 😊

Dear Year 2,

We hope you are all well and still enjoying your home learning. We know you are all working hard and we are so proud of you all. It has been great to see some of your creations you have made through the emails you have sent. Remember, if you would like to share your work or send us any pictures, you can use the school email hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject). It really makes us smile when you do.

We hope you all enjoyed World Oceans Day on the 8th June and learnt some important information about saving our sea creatures. Have you come up with any ideas on how we could help save the sea creatures by reducing our use of plastic? Have you made any changes at home? We loved learning the recycle it song and we hope you did too. Did any of you make instruments from recycled items in your house?

This week we will be celebrating Dudley Castle’s birthday. Do you think you know how old the castle is? There is also a chance for you to enter a competition to win a family ticket to Dudley Zoo & Castle so look out for the details on this week’s overview. For topic this week, we would like you to focus on the history of Stourbridge. It is very important to learn about where we are from as we should be proud of where we live.

We have also set you the weekly Oak Academy Learning tasks for English and maths as well as lots of other exciting extra challenges. For our science focus this week we are looking at forces and would like you to explore using forces in your home.

As always, we ask that you try your best with your home-learning but don’t worry if you can’t complete all of the tasks. Hope you have a lovely week and keep smiling.

Take care,

Mr Bottoms, Miss Davies, Miss Moore

Hello Year 2,

We hope you have had a fun filled week and enjoyed the lovely weather again! We have been so lucky to have the beautiful sunshine over the past few weeks. We hope you have found the activities interesting and fun and that you have been able to learn lots and practise your Maths and English skills.

It has been great to see all the photos of the work and other activities you have been doing, it puts a smile on all of our faces to see the things you are proud of. Remember if you would like to share anything from this week to email the school at hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk. Please put Y2 in the subject box so the office can pass it on to your teacher to see.

This past week we have all been practising our gardening and Mr Bottoms has been planting and nurturing his strawberry, blueberry and pea plants. They have needed lots of watering too! Have you been growing any fruit or vegetables at home? We would love to see how you are getting on with your gardening skills!

Remember to keep smiling and try your best with the things you are doing at home. We are all so proud of you!

Week Commencing 1st June 2020

Dear Year 2,

We hope you all had a lovely half term holiday. We hope you managed to get out for some exercise and have lots of fun playing. We went out for some nice walks and bike rides!

We hope you enjoyed the activities we set before half term and we would love to see some of the things you have been doing. You could also send us anything exciting you may have done or made during the holiday. Remember to email us on hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk, putting Y2 in the subject box. Thank you to those of you have already done so. It really does brighten up our day to receive a message from you!

This week we are continuing with the Oak Academy lessons in Maths and English. There are some great challenges for you to try too.

For our topic work this week we are going to be finding out about Tim Peake and his epic journey to space. It would be great if you could find out any extra information which you could share with us.

We hope you will enjoy making your pictures of space- remember to be as creative as possible and think really carefully about the colour, shape and size of the different parts.

As always, remember to do your best with the activities and don’t worry if you can’t complete them all. Continue to find time to be with your family and help out around the house too!

Take care,

Week Commencing 18th May 2020

Hello Year 2

We hope you have had a good week and have enjoyed the activities we have set you. Thank you for sending in pictures of your work for us to see. Remember, if you would like to share your work or send us any pictures, you can use the new school email hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject). It really brightens up our day when you do.

This week we would like you to continue with the Oak Academy lessons for English and maths. As well as this you have some challenges in both subjects. Our topic continues looking at journeys and this week has a geography focus. Hopefully you managed to make the most of the dry weather and explored the local area last week. This week we would like you to compare it to a seaside location. In science we are continuing to look at materials and thinking about which would be best for making a boat. Don’t worry if you can’t complete every task, just try your best.

The focus for wellbeing this week is Stay Safe and we are focusing on how we can keep safe online. In P.E. we would like you to have your own sports day. We have suggested different races you could do but feel free to think of your own. If you don’t have anyone to race against you could compete against yourself by doing the same race twice and trying to beat your time.

We hope you all received and enjoyed reading your letter from your teacher this week. We all miss you and your happy faces. Stay safe!

Miss Davies, Mr Bottoms and Miss Moore.

Hello Year 2!

We hope you have been making the most of the sunshine this week as well as enjoying some of the home learning tasks we set for you.

Miss Moore, Miss Davies and Mr Bottoms have all been in school over the past 2 weeks and it has been lovely to see some of the work you are doing to make the school bright and beautiful. The amazing artwork on the school gates made us smile before we even got into school. If you live nearby its definitely worth walking past to have a look!

This week we will be carrying on with our online learning for maths and English. Remember to also use what you have at home, maybe you could find some books and read one to your family that you haven’t read for a while. As part of your topic work, we would like you to explore your local area so hopefully the weather is nice and you can go for a walk.

This week the focus for wellbeing is ‘Get Active’. We would like you to be as active as possible. This can be done inside your home or outdoors if the weather is nice. Remember that a healthy body equals a healthy mind. Make sure you encourage your family to get involved, this can be something fun that you do together.

It has been lovely to see some of your work you have been sending in. Remember, if you would like to share your work or send us any pictures, you can use the new school email hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject). It really does make us smile seeing all of your hard work.

We are really missing you all and can’t wait to see you
again! Keep up the hard work.

Week Commencing 4th May 2020

Good Morning Year 2!

We hope you are all well, happy and enjoyed the tasks we set for you last week! We are very excited about the new topic of ‘Journeys into the Unknown’ and seeing the designs of your own rockets to travel into space. It would certainly be unknown for all of us to be there! It would be great if you could share some of your work with us by emailing it to the school at hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk (Please put Y2 in the email title/subject)

This week we would like you to continue with the daily Maths and English lessons on The Oak Academy website, hopefully you are enjoying them and learning lots from it. To go alongside this there are some extra challenges where you could describe a setting you might visit in your rocket and make your own obstacle course using directions to navigate it.

This week, we'd also like to invite you and your family to join in the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of VE Day, which is happening on Friday 8th May. Please click on the link on the school website homepage or here.

We all know how tough and difficult it is to be at home for such a long time now, but remember the more exercise and activities you can do will make you feel more positive, healthier and happier!

If you can, take a minute to have a look our special video on the school website and see if you can spot all of the Year 2 team with our special words to you all.

We all miss you lots, have a great week!

Mr Bottoms, Miss Moore & Miss Davis
