Thursday 2nd February - Time to Talk Day.

We are taking part with 'Time to Talk Day' on Thursday 2nd February

We want everyone to feel comfortable talking about mental health – whenever they like. Talking about mental health reduces stigma, helping to create supportive communities where we can talk openly about mental health and feel empowered to seek help when we need it.

That’s why opening up the conversation about mental health problems is so important – by talking about it we can support ourselves and others.

However you do it, have a conversation about mental health.”  https://timetotalkday.co.uk/

16th October 2021 - IMPORTANT UPDATE

Dear Parents and Carers,

Unfortunately I am contacting you today to let you know that all parents consultations will now change to telephone consultations this coming week.

As we have now outbreak control measures in place, one of the steps on DFE contingency framework is to limit parents attendance in settings, so it is with regret that we will not be able to go ahead with face to face meetings as planned.

Due to rising case numbers in Dudley, please see new local authority guidance from Public Health that has come out today regarding COVID measures for ALL DUDLEY SCHOOLS.

The main change is that children undergoing a PCR test are required to stay at home until the outcome of the test is known.

Thank you for your continued support,

Kind regards,

Mrs Hannaway  & Mr D Edgar

Sunday 18th July 2021 - Message from Mrs Hannaway

What a challenging year it has been!

I was really hoping that it would end in a positive way, and all the staff would be waving you and the children off on Wednesday, wishing you all a Happy Holiday. Sadly this is no longer the case.  I am writing this with a heavy heart to let you know that since Friday evening through to this morning, we have four further bubble closures due to positive tests for children. With a further 120 children and 18 additional staff isolating it is not possible to continue until the end of term as planned.

Having spoken to Public Health and the Local Authority, the governors have now made the decision that school is now closed to all pupils from Nursery to Year 5, as we do not have sufficient staff to operate safely.

School is only open to Year 6 pupils on Monday who will need to come in via the Heath Farm Road entrance - Monday 19th July will be their final day. Remote learning for all pupils is in place, please access everything through the school website and purple mash as usual.

Despite all the challenges, we are so proud of the children and staff who have shown great resilience, good humour and independence throughout this pandemic. Huge thanks to our Gig Mill family too for your support – it really has kept us going.

Please stay safe and look after each other over the holidays. I do hope that you all have a wonderful time making special family memories.

See you all on Monday 6th September 2021.

If you would like to be considered for a Key Worker place for your child/ren, please complete this form preferably by 1.00pm today, but we will look at submissions again at 3.00pm this afternoon.

We need this information in order to create bubbles and staffing levels. We will also need the above form completing even if you have previously been given a place or if you have emailed us within the last few days. Thank you for your co-operation.

4th January 2021 - 8.35pm
As I outlined to you in my message of 30.12.20 - I am sure that many of you will have just heard the Prime Minister’s broadcast. Schools do not get given any prior knowledge about announcements so we find out news about schools at the same time as parents and the general public.  There are huge changes across England from tomorrow.

So unfortunately Gig Mill will now be closed to all pupils tomorrow whilst we create contingency plans for key workers and vulnerable pupils as outlined at 8pm.

This is not the start to the school year we had planned for, and like you we are very disappointed. Many of your children may already be in bed, and expecting to be in school tomorrow, and I know this news presents huge challenges for our school community.

The remote learning plans for this week are already uploaded to our website, which is a starting point for your children.

Kind regards,  Mrs Hannaway & Mr Edgar

30th December 2020 -

I hope you are all well and keeping safe. Schools do not get given any prior knowledge about announcements so we find out news about schools at the same time as parents and the general public.  You may have been watching today's announcement which states the majority of Primary schools will be back as planned next week. So as it stands now, Gig Mill will be open to all pupils on Tuesday 5th January. If this changes for any reason (if we are instructed not to open) we will inform you immediately. Thank you, Mrs Hannaway.

5th November 2020 - Parent/Carer Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we start our second national lockdown I would ask that we all continue to work together as a school community, and follow the guidance set out by the government. This is to protect your children, your families and our school staff team and our families.

All existing arrangements will continue, and will be reviewed in line with any new local or national guidance. Please note that we do not get any prior notice of what these changes may be, and hear on the national news, or via online alerts, just as you do.

We would urge you again to arrive at drop off times, not before, ensuring space for other year groups and parents to safely drop off, keeping to social distancing wherever possible. Please remember it is ‘drop and go’ system for everyone, only one adult per family group is allowed on school premises.  Any queries need to be sent in to info@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk unless there is an urgent matter you need to inform senior leaders at that time on the entrance gates. If this is the case we ask you to step aside and have that conversation with a member of staff at 2m distance, as soon as they are available. Please do not congregate by the school gates and respect others in the school community by following HANDS, FACE, SPACE.

Please support us as a school community to protect others. As throughout this time, we continue to be vigilant, and minimise risks within school - please see attached guidance from Dudley LA related to parents and carers wearing masks.

Thank you for continuing to contact school regarding any COVID related absences, and keeping us up to date with any children self- isolating. There are two additional Dudley test centres available. (New flyer available here).

Please be assured that the health, safety and well-being of your children, the staff working within the school and the wider community remain our most important priority. Thank you again for your ongoing co-operation, support and understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs A Hannaway                &           Mr D Edgar

Headteacher                                    Chair of Governors

23rd October 2020 - Parent/Carer Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly thank you all for supporting school throughout this first half term in school.

Many of you have already had parent consultations with staff earlier this week and were really pleased with the children’s first successes.

We are rescheduling the parent consultations originally planned for Wednesday 21st October to take place on Wednesday 4th November instead. The same appointment times will go ahead for Nursery and Reception classes. Planned appointments for 2B, 2D, 4F, 4T, 5K and 1H appointments from Tuesday 20th October will also go ahead on Wednesday 4th November. If this is not suitable for you please email info@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk

Our HSA held the AGM on Monday. There are some really different ideas for events this term, and to get started, if you want to join in a virtual treasure hunt please click on this link. Also, if anyone is out and about on an autumn walk please collect pine-cones for a special creative project after half term.

All schools have been asked by Public Health to remind parents and carers that should anyone in your family become unwell, please continue to use the same reporting procedures to info@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk during the half term break.

On behalf of everyone at Gig Mill, we wish you all a happy and healthy half term.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hannaway and Gig Mill Team

16th October 2020 - Parent/Carer Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we are approaching the end of our first half term in school, it is lovely to see how the children continue to adapt to the ever changing circumstances and are happy to be in school.

Reading partnership continues and is working well, with books going home each Monday, and being returned on Thursdays. The launch of Bug Club for accessing Reading remotely has got off to a good start, if you haven’t yet had chance, please log in and see what’s available.

Lunchtime routines are now established, so from Thursday 22nd October Year 3 will be able to access the dining hall at lunchtimes. Instead of eating in the classrooms each class will eat in the dinner hall, and Year 3 children will be able to access hot lunches (as well as grab bags) Thursday and Friday. Schools meals are available at £2.40 daily and the menu is displayed here if you wish to access this.

Parents consultations will be going ahead from Y1, 2 and 3 on Monday, Y 4, 5 and 6 Tuesday and Nursery & Reception on Wednesday. As per my earlier message: if your appointment time preference was available, please ensure that the phone number you provided is accessible, and remember that it will appear from an unidentified number. A few parents will have had a specific message to rearrange appointments for a different time or date.

Remote learning has been available on the website for any children not currently in school. Please be aware that children will also be bringing home personalised letters (as for Bug Club) during next week so that they will be able to access other sites from home too.

As throughout this time, we continue to be vigilant, and minimise risks within school - thank you all for supporting us with school risk assessments, wearing masks as advised by the Local Authority, and assisting us with routines, as part of our new ‘normal’ at Gig Mill.
In line with government and local policy, we ask all Parents/Carers to read this letter

Thank you again for your ongoing co-operation, support and understanding.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hannaway and Gig Mill team

11th September 2020- Parent/Carer Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you everyone !

Our first full week in school has been wonderful, the children are becoming familiar with their new routines, new classmates and teachers. It has been lovely to see lots of smiles and to hear children’s laughter in school once again. Our initial focus on pastoral care and buildings relationships is ensuring that the children have really good starting points for the school year ahead.

We knew the new arrangements put in place for COVID, to safeguard pupils, parents and staff would be a challenge for drop off and collection, and asked that you bear with us. This week these procedures are now working well, and we will continue to monitor both Heath Farm Road and Broadway entrances as we add Reception and Nursery drop offs next week.

We will continue to monitor and adjust our routines next week, and we look forward to:

·         Reception children joining us for their first full week

·         Nursery children joining us for transition from Monday onwards

Thank you for your support as we work through this together. Myself and the staff would be grateful for your further help and consideration with:

1.   Keeping to the edges of the paths, especially in the narrowest sections.  This will particularly be the case on
   Monday at Broadway entrance.

8.30am usual drop and go for Years 2 and 3

8.40am usual drop off for Year 1

8.45am onwards new drop off for Reception (children with siblings will be let in first)

2.   Thank you for keeping school exits clear, as we need to have as much space as possible for later drop
       offs and collections.

3.    Year One collection times and procedures will remain as they have for this week going forward.

Due to congestion on Broadway after school today (Friday 11th), Reception pick up time on Monday will be from
       2.45pm - 2.55pm until further notice.

Please be aware that there are new national guidelines from Monday 14th September regarding social distancing and congregating in groups of more than 6 (unless from the same household or support bubble).

Thank you very much indeed for your ongoing co-operation.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hannaway and Gig Mill team

5th September 2020- Parent/Carer Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we have now completed 2 days in school, I wanted to say thank-you and share with you how wonderful it is to have all of the children back and see them settle so brilliantly into school. They are really enjoying getting to know their new teachers and are responding well to the new requirements of extra hand-washing, sanitising and the staggered playtimes and lunchtimes that we have put in place to maximise safety.

Both at Heath Farm Road and Broadway entrances we are monitoring the start and end times of the day, and as part of daily debriefing we are considering what is working well and what needs to be improved further. Thank-you for your feedback which has been considered as part of this process. We made a number of changes from Thursday to Friday, and this really seemed to help.

We will continue to monitor and adjust our routines next week, and we look forward to:

  • Reception children joining us for transition next week

  • For Years 1 and 2, hot lunches will be served as part of Universal Free School meals

  • Fruit for schools scheme resumes midweek

In the meantime, can I please ask for your further help and consideration with 3 actions:

  1. Parents are so keen to drop off and collect their children on time that they are arriving up to 15 minutes before their allocated time. Therefore please do not arrive before your allocated time.

  2. In parts the footpaths are narrow, so please keep to the edges of the paths and ‘drop and go’.

  3. A number of parents are still concerned about social distancing. Please can we ask that you do not stay at school exits socialising, as we need to have as much space as possible for later drop offs and collections.

Thanks everyone, we will get there. Monday will only be Day 3.

Thank you very much indeed for your ongoing co-operation.

Kind regards,

Mrs Hannaway and Gig Mill team

A
huge thank you to all the children for their super work at home.  Our new e-mail address (hello@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk) has been a great success. So please email in photographs of your creations for world ocean day to add to our school gallery this week!

It was wonderful today to welcome back our year six children who were able to return in a safe and planned way to Gig Mill.  Whilst there were a few nerves at the start of the day, by the end of the day there were smiles, so a huge thank you to all staff who have been working for several weeks to make this happen.

The key worker children here for the past ten weeks continue to be with us, and the number of allocated places are prioritised (as per government guidance).

We will continue to keep you updated via text messages, this website and email.  Should you need to contact school, where possible please use info@gig-mill.dudley.sch.uk. Pupils in year one and reception will hopefully re-join school over the following weeks and at each step, the process will need to be carefully managed to ensure the safety and well-being of all the pupils, parents and staff.

We are all trying our very best to support children both in school and at home in these challenging times. Many thanks for your continuing support.  Take care and stay safe.

Year Six Parents and Carers

It has been lovely to speak to many of you during the past two weeks. Thank you to all of you who have taken the time to respond to the survey about a possible return to school and careful consideration about the right decision for your child and your family.

Following a positive or 'maybe' response many of you had questions regarding the detailed risk assessment, which we have endeavoured to answer.

Whether your child remains at home and will be accessing home learning, or may have been in school accessing childcare for critical key workers for the past ten weeks, or has been allocated a year 6 place to return on Monday, we will continue to do our best to support you and your children.

IMPORTANT: all year six places have been allocated, if you haven't had an e-mail within the last two days confirming your child's place, please do not come to school on Monday - thank you.

Please allow us time to be sent further guidance and we will communicate with you as soon as we know more details.

Thank you for your understanding, Mrs Hannaway.
